Music Monday! Natasha Kmeto, Lubec, Dana Buoy & More

On Friday, it was announced that Portland's own Natasha Kmeto has been signed to Federal Prism, the label headed by TV on the Radio's Dave Sitek. With the announcement came a first listen to Kmeto's new song, "Inevitable," the title track to Kmeto's forthcoming album that will be released later this year on Federal Prism. Of the signing, Sitek said, "Natasha Kmeto is hands down my favorite producer out there. Writing incredible songs with high emotional cliffs and super bass valleys just happens to be what we need right now. I am in awe and I can't wait see where she leads us next." Pretty high praise. With "Inevitable," Kmeto has made something that's both icy cool and steaming hot, with a minimalist melodic phrase repeated for deep impact.

Lubec has finished their much-anticipated debut album, The Thrall, with a release slotted later in the summer. Here's "Almost Vince," a graceful but powerful, bruised but beautiful slice of dream-pop—a sound the band aptly coins as "garage-gaze". The record was recorded with Robert Komitz at the Frawg Pound Studio, and while the finished product won't be out for a little while, Lubec plays tonight—as in tonight tonight—at Valentine's with Us Lights and bed.

Dana Buoy—AKA Akron/Family drummer Dana Jannsen—has a new EP on the way, following up his terrific 2012 album Summer Bodies. The five song Preacher EP will be out July 22 on Middle West, and here's the glowing, irresistibly upbeat title track. This one should be blasting out from car radios and transistors all summer long. Dana Buoy will play at the Doug Fir on August 25 with Sylvan Esso.

And here's maybe the feel-bad hit of the summer, a bludgeoning new one from Drunk Dad, from their upcoming Ripper Killer album, out July 1 on Eolian Empire. "Life's Work" starts inauspiciously enough, but soon the booming guitar riffs short-circuit as a deranged voice chimes in on top of spastic drums. A "breakdown" of sorts—the sort of bleary, dizzy moment of clarity that comes in between repeated pummelings—doesn't last, and soon the band lapses into frantic, lovable chaos. Drunk Dad play a record release show on July 11 at the Information Warehouse with Honduran, Big Black Cloud, Tyrants, and Health Problems.

Now piece together your shattered soul with a heartwarming, soothing new one from Ben Nugent, who drummed for Dolorean (RIP), as well as with Grails, Damien Jurado, Holy Sons, and other bands. His solo debut, Moving Targets, is a charming record with echoes of '70s AM radio and lots of lovely melodies. Here's "Sachi," which is like Seals and Crofts but a lot better—and then it gets psychedelic. That's Nugent drumming and singing, and also playing guitars and keys; guest musicians include Lewi Longmire, Jesse Bates, Sig Wilson, Craig Emmons, and Rob Oberdorfer. Here's something new by a local bedroom recording project called Sinless, and this opening title track from the recent Cool EP is a jangling, dreamy bit of pop. Sinless' main man Paolo tells us, "The name SInless came from a talk I had with an Indian guru whom I used to play the harmonium for." Check out Sinless' full EP over on the band's Soundcloud page.

After slightly changing their name from the Rivera, La Rivera is set to release their long-gestating new album, the aptly titled Late Bloomer, next week. In the past I've praised their single "Midnight Choir," which gets a fresh paint job in the form of a remix/master on the new album. Here's "Reaching Out," a downtrodden but not exactly downbeat ballad from the record, with classic-rock accoutrements and lonesome pedal steel guitar. La Rivera play their record release show on Wednesday, June 25 at the Goodfoot.

Sassparilla is releasing not one, but two new albums this week. One's called Pasajero and the other's Hullabaloo; the first is a studio-oriented effort while the latter captures the band's live sound. Here's a track from Pasajero called "Cool Thing," a muted, more subdued effort from the band in contrast to the band's rowdier, string-band sound (complete with washtub bass) found on Hullabaloo. To celebrate the release of both records, Sassparilla plays this Friday night, June 20, at the Doug Fir.

We'll end today with one from Portland resident Ray Raposa, who's back recording under his Castanets moniker after a stint as Raymond Byron and the White Freighter. He's got a new record coming out on Asthmatic Kitty on August 19, and here's "Out for the West," which premiered last week on Stereogum. It finds Raposa taking on decidedly less organic sounding instruments in favor of chunky digital sounds. There's a Trail Blazers reference in there, too, if you're listening.
