Gazans Launch Their Own Rubble Bucket Challenge

Posted by Ansel Herz on Tue, Aug 26, 2014 at 2:14 PM

What do you do when the ALS ice bucket challenge is going viral, but water and ice aren't easy to come by? "It came to my mind that it's good idea to show the whole picture—how Gaza looks now, rubble, destruction, cement with sand, small rocks," says journalist Ayman Al-Aloul, explaining to NBC News how he came up with the idea for a "rubble bucket challenge" in Gaza.

Here's his version. But it's this video—the giggling of little Khalid and the stoicism of Hafiz—that gets me. About 43 percent of Gaza's population is 14 years old or younger.

The Israeli military bombed an apartment tower and a shopping complex today "in an apparent new tactic aimed at increasing pressure on Hamas," according to the Guardian. So there's plenty of rubble to go around.
