Video Vriday! Greylag, the Upsidedown, Hawks Do Not Share & More

Posted by Ned Lannamann on Fri, Aug 29, 2014 at 3:58 PM

Portland band Greylag shot this live video of "Another" at their recent Mississippi Studios show on July 27. "Another" is the advance track from their upcoming self-titled album, which will be out October 14 on Dead Oceans, and this provides a glimpse of what the band's new incarnation will look and sound like live. Leading up to Greylag's street date, they'll do a short West Coast tour with Athens band the Whigs, and will hit Mississippi Studios again on Friday, October 10.

The Upsidedown have a new EP called Under, and here's "Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again," a cover of a song by Adelaide band the Angels that was a huge hit in their homeland of Australia but remains relatively unknown here. The answer to the titular question, of course, is "no way, get fucked, fuck off," which you should feel free to shout at your computer monitor, as long as you say it with love. Fittingly, the Upsidedown play their first Australian show tonight, part of a six-date jaunt down under in which they're opening for the Dandy Warhols. This rendition is a tribute to the Angels' Doc Neeson, who died of a brain tumor earlier this year.

Check out the video for Hawks Do Not Share's "Break Even," which director Justin Lowe says "combines David Lynch like moodiness with heavy drinking and has a twist ending." This is an apt description for the ethereal, downtrodden clip, which looks like it was shot at the Secret Society Ballroom. The song comes from Hawks Do Not Share's new album HDNS, due out September 9. The band plays at the Doug Fir on Friday, September 12 opening for the UK's Money, and will also play an in-store at Music Millennium on Sunday, September 14.

"Eliminate 'should' from my vocabulary" is the lyrical theme of Otis Heat's new tune "ING," the title track off their upcoming album. This action-packed video includes bikes and go-karts and summertime fun, and the album features the Portland trio's funk-rock over 14 tracks (get a further taste at their Bandcamp). Before Otis Heat kicks off a lengthy tour that'll take them to more than 35 US cities through the end of October, they're playing an album release show on Friday, September 5 at the Star Theater.

Broken Bells' latest video, for "Control," from their recent album After the Disco, has an outer-space theme, combining old footage of all kinds of interstellar activity with clips of James Mercer and Brian Burton performing the song. There's a mysterious spiky pink orb that travels through the song, a visual leitmotif that's been part of other After the Disco videos. Broken Bells continue their US tour of theaters in late September.
