Portland Cocktail week is mostly a gathering for professional bartenders—it’s like a residential school with classes on mixing drinks and the bar business—but they do have a couple of events that are open to the public, both happening this Thursday and both looking like they could be fun.

The first sees the return of the Bacardi Bar Challenge which pits four teams of 10 against each other to build a bar in a day. Each team has to come up with a concept, a marketing plan and budget and then literally design and build the thing from scratch (it’s a bit like a booze version of restaurant wars from Top Chef). Hopefully, by the time the doors open to the public all the hard work will be over and there will be four distinct bars and drink menus to check out.

After, there’s the USBG Showcase, which doubles as a closing party. Hosted in a tent at the Jupiter Hotel, each of the attending 37 chapters of the Bartenders Guild come up with a concept that they think best represents their region—that obviously includes drinks, but also the atmosphere and design of their individual bar space. The best bit: all drinks are covered by the $20 entrance fee. Bacardi Bar Challenge, Left Bank Annex, 240 N Broadway, Thursday 23, 6 pm-8 pm, $20; USBG Party, Jupiter Hotel, 800 E Burnside, 8 pm-11 pm, $20
