The Flying Fish Company is basically a shack nestled next to Kruger’s market on SE Hawthorne, but it is one of the best places in town to buy seafood. Along with sustainable fresh and flash-frozen fish, they also dabble in fresh pasture meats, local spirits, seasonings and oil—they pack a lot into a small space. Tomorrow is their third anniversary and they are throwing quite the party. First off, there’s free beer for as long as the barrel of Base Camp IPA lasts. They will have a dozen of their vendors offering samples, including Reister Farms (lamb), Shadow El Rancho (pork) and Yakobi Fisheries (salmon), there’s a kids’ quesadillas table and they will be offering tastes of their own smoked salmon, which is brined in local honey and sea salts (yum).

Also on the agenda are demonstrations of how to can your own tuna (apparently it’s easy), the best way to filet a fish and how to shuck an oyster without stabbing yourself (there will also be fresh oysters to try). The Thrive food cart will be there. There’s music and a kid’s show at noon. All food and drink in the shack is 10 percent off. It’s a local, family-owned business. Yeah, it’s going to rain, but everything is covered. That’s a lot of good reasons to go! Flying Fish Company, 2310 SE Hawthorne, Saturday, noon–6 pm
