BIRDMAN Batman versus the Hulk! WHO YA GOT?
  • BIRDMAN Batman versus the Hulk! WHO YA GOT?

BIRDMAN—Alejandro González Iñárritu's latest is a technical tour de force with some fantastic performances—I'd honestly recommend seeing it to just about anyone, even though I ultimately didn't like the movie very much? Weird.

NIGHTCRAWLER—Much to everyone's dismay, Nightcrawler isn't a movie about the X-Man, but instead a movie about Jake Gyllenhaal going all TMZ. Still, Ned Lannamann writes that "the directorial debut of screenwriter Dan Gilroy, Nightcrawler is a pulpy rush."

HORNS—Courtney Ferguson thought this adaptation of Joe Hill's novel fumbled the book's subtlety, proving that "the devil is in the details."

WHIPLASH—I feel fairly certain in stating that never before and never again will there be a movie about jazz drumming that's as intense as Whiplash.

WHITE BIRD IN A BLIZZARD—Marjorie Skinner sums up Gregg Araki's clumsy latest in three letters: "WTF."

LISTEN UP PHILIP—Eric D. Snider found this literary comedy (that's a genre, right?) to be "written and directed with astonishing sure-footedness."

BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP—Courtney Ferguson quickly learned why the Nicole Kidman thriller was scheduled to screen for critics only after we'd gone to press.

We've got more reviews, as ever, in Film Shorts—including Megan Burbank's take on Alain Resnais' Je t'aime je t'aime—and here are your Movie Times. BAMF!
