CRITICS CHOICE: CRONOS “Sweet! There are probably some Altoids in here!”
  • CRITIC'S CHOICE: CRONOS “Sweet! There are probably some Altoids in here!”

Tomorrow night at the Hollywood Theatre—to kick off the Hollywood's Critic's Choice series—I'm showing Guillermo del Toro's Cronos, a fantastic bit of weird, cool, creepy fun from 1993. It's del Toro's first feature film, it has to do with vampirism and family and Ron Perlman wanting to get a nose job, and there's a lot of stuff in there that del Toro would go on to explore more in his later films—Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil's Backbone, Mimic, Blade II, the Hellboy movies. (There are not a ton of Pacific Rim connections.) Given that the film's North American theatrical release was limited to two theaters, it's safe to say that opportunities to see Cronos on the big screen have always been uncommon. So take this opportunity to see it at the Hollywood! I can more or less promise that you'll have a great time.

I'm also giving away a pair of tickets to tomorrow night's screening to Mercury readers. (The Cronos device gives eternal life; I give you a fun way to spend your Thursday night.) All you've got to do to enter to win the tickets is email me today, Wed Dec 13, before 3 pm, and make sure your subject line is "Cronos device." I'll pick a winner at random (or, more likely, based on whoever seems most excited) and email them this afternoon to let them know they've won. Have at!
