Yesterday, I got an email from Will Fries at the Funhouse Lounge with what appears to be the latest installment of schools rejecting student performances over content concerns. Here's what Fries wrote in a press release sent on behalf of the Funhouse Lounge and local theater groups:

Funhouse Lounge and a growing coalition of local theater groups are fighting censorship by helping a high schooler's production of "EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL" after they lost their performance space due to content concerns. In light of recent national & international censorship stories the community views this as a simple way they can help stand up for everyone's freedom of speech on a local level while encouraging go-getter millennials & educating them on the opportunities in professional theater. This still-growing community coalition is coming together to help any way they can including finding space for rehearsals & performances, set construction, and technical assistance among the many resources and skill sets being donated. Any organizations wanting to lend a hand are encouraged to contact evilhelp@funhouselounge.com

According to Fries, a local high schooler was told she could produce the musical for her senior project, and had an opening date set for this month. She bought rights to the play, scheduled auditions, and ran rehearsals for all of December. Says Fries: "On January 7, after nearly 6 weeks and over 110 hours of rehearsal, just 15 days before they planned to open, [the students] were told they would not be allowed to perform the show at school as it was not 'school-appropriate.'"

So now Funhouse Lounge has donated their space and staffing for performances on January 29, 30, and 31, with more performances to be announced, likely at an as-yet-undetermined second venue.
