• The first of a two-part conversation panel I am co-hosting with Portland Monthly’s Eden Dawn, “Portland Fashion: A Look Back” will draw on the experiences of designers and retailers to paint a picture of the city’s fashion design legacy—which is more extensive than you might think! It’s part of the Portland Art Museum’s effort to give local context to its Italian Style exhibit, which also features work from some of Portland’s brightest design talents. • No discussion of Italian contributions to fashion is complete without addressing the importance of craftsmanship. That’s why the Portland Art Museum’s programming in conjunction with the Italian Style: Fashion Since 1945 exhibit includes a showcase of some of Portland’s own design talent, demonstrating and discussing their own techniques live in the gallery space. • Author Meg Lukens Noonan traveled around the world, from Florence to Peru to Sydney, to trace the provenance of one incredibly expensive coat. She recorded her findings in the book The Coat Route: Craft, Luxury, and Obsession on the Trail of a $50,000 Coat, and will speak this week as part of a series in conjunction with the Portland Art Museum’s Italian Style exhibit.
