  • MARY POPPINS, SWEEPIN' THE DRAMZ: Tbf, those costumes look delightful.

Portland's hyper-local answer to the Tonys, the Drammy Awards, were announced last night at a ceremony at the Newmark Theatre. Full giant list of winners after the jump, but first, some initial observations:

1. There were so. many. musicals. on the list of nominees to begin with. SO MANY! Maybe... TOO many? Oregon Children's Theatre's Northwest Children's Theater's Mary Poppins was evidently a big winner.

2. Speaking of musicals, I'm reminded YET AGAIN that Portland Center Stage put one on about Victorian murderess Lizzie Borden. AND I DIDN'T GET TO SEE IT. (It won an award for lighting design.)

3. It's great to see stage manager Jenn Lindell winning a Spotlight award from the Portland Area Theatre Alliance! Her work with groups like the millennial-focused overunder arts has injected the Portland theater scene with some necessary weirdness.

4. Cash money for PETE, Theatre Vertigo, and Kristen Mun. The Portland Civic Theatre Awards, grants announced the same night as the Drammys, went to some real worthy projects this year (and two of our more innovative theater companies). Portland Experiment Theatre Ensemble's getting a new soundsystem, Theatre Vertigo's making renovations to the Shoebox Theatre (about time!), and Kristen Mun is getting funded "to create an armory of theatrical weaponry." If you've seen Mun's excellent fight choreography (most recently in Portland Actors Ensemble's Macbeth at Lone Fir Cemetery), you know why this sounds awesome.

Okay, here's the whole damn list. It's probably too late, but maybe don't click through if you have an aversion to Mary Poppins.
