—I didn't go to the first Portland edition of the Urban Air Market last summer because Pickathon, and from what I heard, you probably didn't go either—blame a saturated market, an out of the way location... or Pickathon, but the SF-founded operation is giving it another shot, this time with a late-summer date that gives it breathing room around competing events, and a more foot-trafficked location. Registration is now open for prospective vendors. Urban Air Market, NW 13th & Hoyt, Sun Aug 30, 11 am-6 pm

—A programming update on the Up/NXT emerging designer showcase/competition that's one of the best parts about the FashioNXT series of fall fashion shows (and for which I'm one of the judges since forever): Thanks to an influx of sponsorship money from Wells Fargo, the competition is re-branding as an "acceleration program," in which the chosen designer will receive a cash prize—in addition to "year-long support in promoting your business, along with professional consulting"—which is the best prize of all when trying to start a new company of any kind. Interested designers should step forward—auditions are August 9.
