At long last, the highly anticipated (I can't believe I'm saying this about a CBS show) Supergirl debuts tonight at 8:30 pm, and from the looks of things, this show is one of the best reviewed of the season. Check it out:

Amidst this age of gloom-and-doom superheroes, Supergirl has no fear of being happy, hopeful, and bright — something that's true to the character that writer Otto Binder and artist Al Plastino created for DC Comics in 1959. And there's something courageous in that daring pursuit. The result is one of the scrappiest and most irresistible shows on television this season.

Like all Greg Berlanti superhero productions, the show is well cast, but the obvious standouts are Melissa Benoist [Supergirl], Mehcad Brooks' charming, confident James (don't call him "Jimmy") Olsen, and Calista Flockhart's Cat Grant. This is Benoist's show, though, and she easily flips the switch between her nerdy girl next door Kara persona and a convincingly powerful, even intimidating, Supergirl when she's throwing punches at aliens.

Best of all, "Supergirl" is just great television. Even those suffering from mild-to-severe super-hero fatigue will be instantly charmed by Benoist's initially uncertain Kara Zor-El and the slick and witty world Greg Berlanti has created for her.

Judging from the first episode, the “girl” in “Supergirl” doesn’t diminish the character so much as define the story, a coming-of-age tale of someone embracing her nature, which happens to involve a cape and heat vision. It’s upbeat, like “The Flash” on CW. Ms. Benoist gives her character’s coming-out an infectious joy reminiscent of a recent Netflix comedy: She’s Unbreakable Kara Zor-El.

The show will live or die by [Benoit's] performance, and based on the evidence of the pilot she appears more than capable. Her Supergirl is spunky without an ounce of corn (or maybe just the right amount of corn): smart and competent but still at this point a beginner, not yet fully aware of her own abilities. She doesn’t know how to fight, so she spends a good part of the premiere getting the stuffing knocked out of her. But she’s learning, and watching her grow into the role in the coming weeks and months promises to be a treat.
