Anthony Gonzalez of French electro-pop band M83 recently announced the departure of keyboardist Morgan Kibby, which means they're looking for a new one—all you gotta do is apply! While the process is as easy as submitting some videos of yourself, there are some non-negotiable requirements. The future M83 keyboardist must be a female singer who can join up in March and remain available for worldwide travel through December.

This isn't the first time M83 has sought out a new member through an open audition; that's how they found multi-instrumentalist Jordan Lawlor in 2011, who's still a member of the band today. The group's use of an online application process seems to signal a shift in how musicians meet and work together. It doesn't always happen through a perceived divine intervention, like lightning strikes a rock and AC/DC is born.

This is a cool, weird thing, that our all-holy internet has the power to unite musicians who might not have met otherwise. That is, until someone slimy and gross like booking agent Justin James uses it as a medium to find "attractive female DJs" who fall within a very limited age bracket and possess a very specific height and weight. Ironically enough, he posted this in a Facebook group called "Support Female DJs," a testament to his own thoughtlessness and also a demonstration of how this type of rhetoric is often "ok" because it's "just how stuff works in the music industry."

Those in the music industry like Justin James who seek out female artists based on age/height/weight perpetuate this virus of patronizing attitudes towards women in the music industry. M83's specification that their new keyboardist must be a woman makes a certain amount of sense, but it gets complicated. Couldn't Journey singer Steve Perry's edgy falsetto qualify?
