Decemberists and Pals to Rock Against Republicans

Already snug in the back pocket of Obama (say hello to Bruce Springsteen for me), Colin Meloy and Chris Funk from the Decemberists are now using their star power, and political smarts, to campaign for Jeff Merkley.

Running for Senate against Gordon Smith (seen here at a khaki convention with George W. Bush), Merkley's campaign will be the beneficiaries of the October 12th "Rock Against Republicans" benefit at the Doug Fir. Joining Meloy and Funk will be China Forbes and Thomas Lauderdale (from Pink Martini), plus "some speakers" as well.

I assume by "speakers" they mean people who will discuss the issues, not electroacoustical transducers that convert electrical signal to sound. Maybe they will have both.

Anyway, the event is open to the public (the door price has yet to be announced), but there will be no advance tickets available. Show up early with cash in hand and do your part to help Merkley get elected.

End Hits: We like Gordon Gano and Gordon Lightfoot, but not Gordon Smith.

Appreciate Funk and Meloy getting involved, and I hate Smith as much as the next guy, but Merkley is not deserving of this kind of support. He's shown himself to be a Dem version of Smith- no backbone, no spine, "finger in the air" politician who can't make promises or commitments- his only campaign strategy is tot ake down Smith. That's like shooting fish in a barrel.

How about supporting a *real* leader?

Oh yeah- this is Oregon, and we don't have any right now. Not a single one.

It's so hard to shill for Merkley. But if Colin Meloy can get over his earlier endorsement of Novick, then I guess I can too.

Mikey: Merkley is a real leader. As Oregon's House Speaker, he led the greenest, most labor friendly and most progressive session we've seen in 30 years. With a one vote majority in the House, he pushed through domestic partnerships, payday lending regulation, updated the landmark bottle bill to include plastic bottles, ensured 25% of Oregon's electricity comes from renewables by 2025, DOUBLED financial ad for college students...I could go on and on.

As for your claim that Merkley hasn't followed through with his commitments, what about all his work over the years on domestic partnerships and environmental legislation? He never gave up the fight and passed domestic partnerships last year AND helped make Oregon's 2007 session the greenest in the country.
