If you're a regular reader of MOD, you've seen me gush over the glory that is Winn Perry--a men's emporium that recalls the era before the common American man's wardrobe defaulted to slovenly. It makes me want to get all Victor Victoria in there, so beautiful are the array of masculine accoutrement. If you have yet to visit the newly minted store, the coming grand opening celebration is this Friday evening, and in addition to the typical wine and munchies affair, will feature live music and readings from original works: Lord Breaulove Swells Whimsy's The Affected Provincial's Companion, Vol. 1 and A. Gustav Bayer's Minutiae of Black Tie Etiquette. Oh, boy! It all goes down at "7 o'clock Post Meridian" (too much?) and in what may very likely be a first for a Portland store event, ties are recommended.

The handy thing about attending Friday evening fashion/shopping events is that if you've got something going on later in the weekend for which you would like to wear something new, you can get your TGIF rocks off at the same time you do your shopping--easy peasy. A couple of highlights going down today are the opening of Rio Wrenn's Rust Couture show at Lille Boutique, including pieces from the R.A.W. Victorian-inspired lingerie line that was last seen at the Mercury's spring fashion show. Also Sofada is holding a trunk show today from 3-9 pm, where you can enjoy refreshments as well as 10% off all purchases and/or orders made today, not only from the Sofada line but also jewelry and accessories from Sahlia Michelle Designs and apparel by Varnish by Kelcey Blanton. Meanwhile, Una is kicking off a weekend-long sale today, with 20% off about half the store, including lines like Clu, Coven, and Chan Luu plus an additional 20% off already marked down pieces--also check out plants at 25% off next door at Artemisia. So chin up, even if it is raining...

The organizers of the fashion show formerly known as Doom Town are at it again, with a new name for their fashion 'n' rock combo platter: Sweet F.A. (the Sweet is for the band, the F.A. is for "fashion and art." The show is being planned for February 21 at the Fez Ballroom, and th search for rock inspired fashion designers is on:

If you are interested in participating in the next show here is what we need from you:

-Sketches of your original designs (6-8 looks)
-Fabric Swatches
-Photos of past work (Doom Town alumni are exempt from this)
-Brief summary of the inspiration for your collection and background information on you and/or your company.

We have a limited amount of space so only the most innovative designs will be featured.

Menswear is strongly encouraged.

All submissions must be in by 8:00PM on Friday, October 24th.

For more information please e-mail us at elizabeth@fashiondisorder.com or vanityguns@hotmail.com.

Having been to these shows I can assure you that they are high energy, super-fun events, and the audience is usually bobbing up and down to the music, the models look like they're having a blast. It's a great way to get exposure for your line out to an audience that's not just fashion-oriented but also potential clients in the music scene.

So get crackin'!

Here's one of those shirts that will get you absolutely no ass, but your college buddies with think it's the shit. It's an electronic drum kit T-shirt that's actually playable from ThinkGeek. You tap the corresponding drum or cymbal on the shirt, and suddenly you're a walking trapset. It's only $29.99, runs on 4 AA batteries, and yep... it's machine washable. Check out the video below for a fun and extraordinarily dorky exhibition. (And just think! By year's end there will be electric guitar shirts, keyboard pants, and touring "T-shirt" bands who will no longer have to lug their crap around in unsafe vans.)

You know that Portland has a ton of independent apparel designers, but did you know that the lack of options for them to produce large quantities of their designs often hampers them from taking their careers to the next level without outsourcing the work to another city (or country)? This week Portland sees the opening of a factory solely dedicated to production work for regional fashion designers, putting us one step closer to a Made in Portland reality. (How's that service economy treating you, by the way?) Get the scoop over on MOD.

Uh-oh. Looks like the transition from Bravo to Lifetime is not going smoothly for Project Runway, according to IMDB:

Supermodel Heidi Klum's hit reality TV fashion design contest Project Runway has been dealt a severe blow as it plans for a new season - a New York judge has blocked the show's move to America's Lifetime network.

The judge has issued a preliminary ruling against the Weinstein Company, which owns Lifetime, to prevent network bosses airing the sixth season of the programme.

Looks like Leanne may have caught the last train on this one. The big bummer here is that if this halts the show, we won't be able to see Lindsay Lohan as the guest judge in the already-filmed series opener. Not to mention that it probably sucks pretty massively for the designers who were accepted for the show. Stay tuned (or not).

The turning of the weather is starting to inspire the search for fall wardrobe readying, and tonight offers two fun ways to get the ball rolling: Seaplane is continuing its run of pop-up shops at 919 NW 23rd (ground floor) with Emily Katz, look for samples and overstock plus pieces from the Bonnie Heart Clyde collection at up to 75 percent off, as well as hand painted vintage shoes and other one of a kind pieces--for men and women. Anyone who knows Katz knows that she's a jack of all trades: there will also be a visual art installation and a performance from her band Love Menu and Horse Feathers. Join the party tonight from 7-10 pm, but the shop will be open through Sunday. And bring in any item on Saturday or Sunday to have custom embroidered for $75!

Just for the boys: If you haven't noticed, the new boutique Parallel has been stepping up Portland's game on the menswear, and tonight they're hosting a menswear trunk show to celebrate, featuring Shipley & Halmos and Trovata, plus wine, munchies, and music.
What do you know about Japan? Let's see: the food is the bomb, anime, awesomely fucked up game shows, Harajuku, used underwear in vending machines--but did you know that more than 20 percent of Japan's population is over the age of 65? They're also oddly practical, in a roundabout sort of way. That's why they are preparing now for the oncoming surge of the adult diaper market by glamorizing them with an adult diaper fashion show, and if you believe the translation of a German article posted a couple years ago on Diaper Blog (what?), Thursday's show wasn't the first. Highlights from the article:

Before the models took over, players at the theater in downtown Tokyo acted out skits instructing viewers how to tell when elderly loved ones need diapers, how to convince them to put them on and how to properly use them.

In one skit, an elderly man shook his head in dismay after his wife pointed out that he wet the bed overnight again.

"Ah, maybe the loose-fitting diapers I use during the day aren't good to use at night," he concluded, leading to a discussion about well-padded nappies made especially for nighttime use.

and:

Nursing home caretakers Mitsuru and Aya Habuka watched with rapt attention, exclaiming when diaper models they hadn't seen before were displayed on stage.

AGHHH! I'm still recovering from the headache induced by trying to wrap my head around last night's designer challenge: The five remaining designers all had to design getups for each other, so everyone was both designing and modeling, and the outfits had to align with a musical-genre theme, like "country" or "hiphop," making it near-impossible to keep track of who was designing what for who without the aid of a spreadsheet. And the worst part is that one of these three people had to be sent home dressed like this:

Meet Amy Embler. Two weeks ago she was just a regular, cute girl. Then the ladies of Fat Fancy worked their magic. Clothes, hair, makeup!

I must say, I am especially looking forward to tonight's installment of Project Runway, because it is guest-judged by LL COOL J! Ah, the hiphop challenge. Now I really think this could go either way for our girl Leanne Marshall--but I'm going to assume she does okay. On the other hand, things don't look so good for Kenley (and her big attitude!):

Well we already know how many of the Project Runway designers made it to New York, the only question now is what is going to happen between now and when Leanne wins? Find out tonight at The Tanker, where we gather every week around the <strike>hearth</strike> DIRECTV to watch Leanne wipe the floor with her unworthy opponents while sipping vodka and mojito drink specials. I'll reconfirm this with the Tanker folks when they open but according to the DIRECTV web site it looks like it will air at the regular hour of 8 pm. See you there!! Oh, and check this out: Leanne just dropped off two new, beautiful pieces at Foundation Garments, so snatch 'em up quick before the rest of the country hears about it:

Skinny Model Season (Yayyyy... )

With runways around the world showing next season's looks, attention once again in being paid to the ongoing debate over skinny models. Madrid is holding to its word and having models checked for a body mass index minimum of 18 before being allowed to walk (only one out of 45 models were eliminated). The CFDA maintains its hands-off approach and receives the expected criticism. Through the din (which is not nearly as deafening as it was last year) comes a very clearheaded analysis of the issue from the Huffington Post:

So then why do we keep seeing such delicately thin young girls model clothes meant to be sold to women with mature figures? One little addressed reason may have to do with the manufacturing process: it's cheaper and easier to mass manufacture clothes that have less built-in shape. Garments with less shaping hang more attractively on linear bodies. Bust darts, waist darts and curved seams are all more difficult to both fit and sew than straight seams. These are the elements of tailored garments that enable clothing to sit smoothly over shapely curves. But-- it takes time and expertise to perfect these elements and this can cost a lot of money. Additionally from a financial perspective, garment pattern pieces with straighter seams can produce better yield from a bolt of fabric. Think about it like this: if you have two cookie cutters, one square and one round that you apply to equally sized sheets of dough, which will give you more cookies with less wasted dough in between?

Fashion cycles keep whirling faster as stores both encourage and cater to consumer demand for a constant influx of new merchandise. Designers are being pushed to their limits to keep up. In today's global market place, having a fashion business is all about dealing with economy of scale- if you can't produce quickly and in large volume, it is very, very difficult to stay in business.

It's definitely worth a read if the issue troubles you at all, and it rightly doesn't let anyone, including consumers, off the hook.

Alright, confusion settled. Kind of. This morning, all six remaining contestants on the show showed 10-piece collections at NY Fashion Week. And read this!!! Did our girl win?! It's impossible to say for sure--the finale is being filmed today--but things are looking very, very good.

Fern Mallis, who oversees New York Fashion Week, saw a more clear winner: Marshall. "It worked from the beginning to the end. There was a concept, she made it work beautifully, and executed it."
Last year's winner, Christian Siriano, agreed.
"I thought Leanne's was fabulous," he said. "She has to be winner, because everything else was not cute."

The answer and spoilers are after the jump for all of you late-to-the-party people. If you haven't yet seen the episode, get ready for the claws to come out. In the spirit of the judges' removal of gloves and coming-out of claws, I will also cease to hold my tongue and say this: Who gives a GODDAMN what Heidi Klum thinks about fashion? SHE IS A FRIGGING UNDERWEAR AND SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SWIMSUIT MODEL. (AND NOT EVEN GOOD UNDERWEAR!) Just keep that in mind when you notice how the only comments she can muster in this episode ARE ABOUT BOOBS. Okay. Better.

Tonight's episode of Project Runway comes just three days before Friday morning's Project Runway showcase at Bryant Park during NY Fashion Week, and there are way too many designers left on the show. It's bewildering, but Gratz Industries has an intensely thorough analysis to help you grope through the darkness.

This episode might well be called "The Reunion Show," as all of this season's eight aufed contestants will be called back to partner with the eight remaining contestants. The challenge: create a dress that reflects the zodiac sign of the aufed designer in the pair. There was some discussion over at Blogging Project Runway about what role the aufed designers will really play--are they merely clients? clients and models? collaborators?--but after viewing the previews about a thousand times we're ready to say they are collaborators only, not clients or models or any combination thereof.

All of this is precipitated by an episode of Project Runway Australia, in which the aufed designers were also brought back and paired with the remaining designers. In that episode, the aufed designers were both collaborators and models, but the real trick of the episode--and one that played smashingly well, we thought--was that the previously aufed designer on the winning team won a place back on the show. So important was this in PR Oz that the previously aufed designer who won her way back on is now in the final three.

Will our Project Runway follow suit? It would certainly up the ante for the aufed designers, and reinvigorate the show mid-season. It all sounds great, until you realize that even just aufing two designers--which has been confirmed by the Powers That Be at Bravo--we're still left with six designers on the show just three days away from the filming of the finale at Bryant Park Fashion Week. (The finalists show their collection at Bryant Park while the regular season episodes are still airing, and the finale episodes are edited together in-season, to be ready in time for their debut.)

But the way this has worked in the past is that four or five designers show lines, with one or two of them acting as red herrings for the viewing public. That way, we don't know which of the last four or five designers the judges are actually scoring. But six runway shows? That's a lot. And now, if one of the aufed designers is added back in, that could mean seven runway shows. At some point, this becomes like the hockey playoffs--everybody makes it, and nobody cares.

Here's a preview video of tonight's episode to tide you over--we'll be watching tonight at The Tanker, where the whimsical DirecTV oracle contends that it will begin at the regularly scheduled hour of 8 pm.
