This was a sad, sad article. Firstly, there was ZERO tie in to any current topical mainstream media event, so the choice of this as the cover article was just confusing. Nice clustering of potential Apocalypse events by category, but really, the movie references got a little old. One or two were funny, but that bit wore out really quickly. It'd have been better just to have a side article listing all of the related movies, and use the space to develop some of the ideas. And if you are going to just do an Armageddon-movie montage, no reference to End of Days? I Am Legend? Apocalypto, for chrissake?! It's got Apocalpse in the name of the movie!

My general feeling about this is that Erik put off writing this until 15 minutes before his final deadline, and then just put down whatever he could think of. Please don't do that again. I know your paper is a rag, but at least I could count on it being a sarcastic, insightful and humorous rag. This was just disappointing.
The police union tactic represents an escalation in the bargaining war for the contract renewal. It's risky because police are well paid, have great benefits, unreal retirement and collect overtime pushing them into upper middle income brackets, at public expense. A review of police salaries, benefits and overtime in relation to others with similar training and responsibility would be telling, as would the litany of officer misconduct that has been not punished, but rewarded with disability and back pay over more than 30 years.

Will Portland's economically depressed citizens take the bait? Perhaps if the officers decide they have no confidence in Commissioner Saltzman, they would like Commissioner Leonard better?

I don't know any police personally, I would bet that 95% are great, they are just swept up in a bad work culture and bad union leadership which makes their work harder and drains public respect and support.
Pls call me at my office to discuss the section 8 issue. 503-823-3589. Pls ask for me or Daniel Ledezma.

I have launched a Section 8 task force--and it includes housing advocates. We are working on improving the success rate for voucher holders. The meetings are public and you are welcome to attend.

The barriers people face include credit histories, transportation issues, personal finances--as well as certain landlords who don't participate in the program. We are looking at a range of options--including getting the word out about the hard work of HAP to improve customer service.

I oppose discrimination period. But there are some steps I can take now to improve the success rate without a change in the law.
using "retarded" to mean slow is just fine in my book (like "that flat tire was retarding that car's progress"), but when it's only used in a disparaging manner, then, sure, I have a problem with it. that's not to say you're not free to use it, just that you should be aware that if somebody objects to that usage, maybe it's not up to YOU to decide if it's okay or not.

if a gay person called you on your use of the word "faggot", would you continue to use it around them? or would you make a consideration based on your relationship with that person and decide maybe your own intentions aren't worth the possible offense you're making?

(as for calling yourself a cracker or a honky, well, if you're a cracker or a honky, then it's your right to do so.... do you also call black people niggers, as they've reclaimed that word for themselves in some ways?)

ah, internet arguments, how fun!

Opinions are being made on a grainy video where you cannot even see the actual struggle. Nothing is abundantly clear on this evidence. Public officials are commenting upon in such a way as to act as though the issue is settled as well. Good to see the Police Union taking a strong stand here. Let all the facts come in. Remember the Harvard Prof arrested in burglary investigation. Not so cut and dried as it first seemed, was it. Subduing a struggling arrestee with a bean bag to the thigh sounds reasonable to me. Get her under control for her own safety and those of the officers and the public exposed to her conduct. Anyone interested in her conduct? Her history. Sounds like she was the size of an adult. If a bean bag stopped her from flailing around and striking others and injuring others, then so be it. If she was mildly submitting to custody, then let's hear those facts. Evidence matters, not rants.

one might wonder if this author was writing per a given audience’s expectations, rather than what some public might better chow down upon, our public 'potential, or benefit', as it were -
i mean if those out there on the other side of the page, the the more passive side by convention, the readers, if they/we demonstrated more often our intellectual demands, eventually those who wrote pabulum would be farmed out to the infant and/or senile - and some of us wouldn’t be bored, but others would get ‘left behind’
-and those of substance would flourish among their kind-

aren’t ideals great

with those who believe in zombies and rapturings, it is difficult to reason, having that not in common
there are those who think they could simply close a door and the oncoming -let's say glacial melt- will pass them by, but,
the the winds of dog will come and blow them away and separate them into heaven and hell as sure as the US justice system - and there ain't nothin' you can do about that! -
so you can see the difficulties in presenting reason to that sort of mind

What would a 'really serious' article about the "apocalypse" (the ship Cousteau sailed?) look like, eh?
would it have fold-outs of how the buildings really collapsed and the heavens really opened?

would abandoned underwear be a sign that the rapture was underway?

Then I say - all you who work in multi-story buildings , donate to this worthy cause and throw your underwear out the highest window, let the wind catch it and let it be a sign that the end of the world as we know it has come; let all this liberated underwear be evidence that thousands of us have ascended, leaving behind the predicted empty underwear; and here you are, still here, and look who’s around you?
Is this what you thought the preacher promised you as the collection plate came around?

for this, the expression "You've got another think coming, eh?" serves so well

vocab 6 th grade
style 6 th grade
challenge 6 th grade

statistically, this suits us, the american lcd public

in the right to privacy is included the right to be and to remain, ignorant

ignorance is so much less fuss and bother than tinkering or re-invention-

but i like the graphic for the article - much more informative than any article could be

He went Rambo. He is obviously unfit to carry a weapon. And yet the PPB falls in lock-step behind him. It's not a "thin blue line" in Portland, it's a fat blue wall. Everclear's musical mediocrity is beside the point, since the article barely gives lip service to their music and instead focuses on the author's myopic personal view of one man's personality. And anyway, "Heroin Girl" was a good song, which gives Everclear one more good song than most of the bands in Portland. There's a reason the Northwest's musical heyday was never referred to as the "Portland Scene".

and really? you think it's valid to dislike a band because they got paid to play a gig for someone who's parents' politics you disagree with? I guess bands are only cool if they play free benefit shows for PETA or some such nonsense.
