I'm told my uncle (who was one of the plaintiffs who took Arkansas' "sodomy laws" to court and had them overturned) and his partner of more than 25 years, as well as my grandmother (a rights activist), are featured in this charming little film. I haven't been able to bring myself to watch it yet, though.

My uncle and his husband (I can't view them any other way) were among the first couples to register for the town's "Couples Registry," and my grandmother had plans to register with her boyfriend, who sadly passed away before it was available. Eureka Springs is actually a very cool, weird little Victorian town, and everyone is thrilled that the "Christians" are dwindling in their bigoted presence. It's one of those remarkable deep-blue progressive islands in the vast wasteland of ignorance and complicity and even hatred I left behind in the South.

Until Bryan and Jim can have legal rights of union, I will never marry. And I hope that the cultural/religious institution of marriage and the legal institution of civil union rights can be "unwed" from one another, so that those who use "they want to change marriage!" and the implicit threat that churches will be forced to "marry" gays can't be used to continue creating second-class citizens and unequal civil rights.

Hilarious! I think maybe we should adopt that gay city logo. It's pretty swanky.
